What is Phentermine?

phentermine reviews

Today we're going to do the first weight loss medication that you should know about to help you with getting the weight off. This medication has been around for a long time - it is called Phentermine.

Phentermine is very safe, effective and is much better than a lot of over-the-counter weight loss pills. Such OTC slimming pills can bring you a lot of side effects because they are not FDA regulated. We really don't know what's in a lot of them.

If you are at the point where you want to take something for your weight to help you succeed, I would strongly recommend talking to your physician. And if your physician doesn't feel comfortable writing Phentermine, because a lot of physicians don't (it's a controlled substance), then have them refer you to a Bariatrician, which is the name for a physician who does medical weight loss. Or a physician who feels comfortable writing for Phentermine.

We'll go over how to use, It's very safe, very effective, approved by the FDA for three months at a time. It can be used off-label for longer than that meaning you make a decision that the risk is not outweighed by the benefit of treating.

This medication takes away the perseverating thought, the thinking all the time about food. When you talk to people and their food addicted or they're having really difficult time getting the weight loss. Over and over you hear that they just can't stop thinking about food. And when you start them on Phentermine, you find that they come back and they say I just don't think about food anymore.

For the first, you should pick a dietary strategy and stick with it because the medication doesn't do it for you. It allows you to not think about food all the time and the stay on the diet you have chosen. Pick a strategy that you know is going to work well with your personality, your lifestyle and then and only then consider starting something like Phentermine so that you won't be thinking about food all the time and it can be just a conscious decision.

Think like: "Ok, I'm going to have this much for breakfast, this much for lunch and this much for dinner and this little bit is going to be my snack". It will help you succeed.

You should always check blood pressure and heart rate prior to starting Phentermine. One of the risks of Phentermine is that it does have the potential, because it has a little bit of a stimulant effect, to raise heart rate and blood pressure. So, check those first.

Your doctor may also check renal functions and sometimes check what's called a metabolic panel. Those are things you want to know are normal before you start taking Phentermine.

The drug is taken once a day in the morning. That is why it doesn't disrupt your sleep or anything. Your doctor typically may follow you up in one week after starting it to recheck heart rate and blood pressure and then once a month thereafter. It is the safe way to do the Phentermine and that is how it should be done.

Find somebody if your own physician does not feel comfortable. Find someone who does feel comfortable iprescribing a controlled substance. Try this drug in addition to whatever dietary strategy you have chosen.

We had asked one of the professors from the Cornell weight-loss program about how long after three months do you have to wait before we starting it. He said that the next day. Because you're at that point you can use it what's called off-label use. It's a decision that your physician makes with you about the fact that the benefit from the weight-loss outweighs any risk of continuing on a Phentermine.

Some people have a concern when they hear Phentermine because they know the history of Fen-Phen. Phentermine was one of the two components of Fen-Phen. Fenfluramine was the one that was taken off the market because it affects people's heart valves. It worked through a system called serotonin. There are serotonin receptors on heart valves.

Phentermine was not the culprit and is very safe in terms of heart valves. Now you understand the history and the difference in case you have that in the back of your mind.

I hope this has been informative about the Phentermine option for you. Again, pick a dietary strategy, talk to somebody about considering starting on Phentermine. It the next time we'll go over some of the other medications that are also options for weight loss.

What Is The Price Of Phentermine?

Phentermine is pretty cheap. It's been around for quite a long time. It comes in three doses: 15 mg, 30mg and 37.5mg.

There are some things you need to know about Phentermine. It's not expensive - even out of pocket it's really relatively cheap. The drug is FDA approved for three months at a time. You can use it for more than three months, which is considered off-label use. It should be used if you go off label. It should be done under the discussion with your provider or physician so that you're fully aware of risks and benefits.

How Does Phentermine Work?

There are some contraindications to using Phentermine. This medication is a stimulant and it's a controlled substance. It's in a class of drugs called amphetamines.

However, it is not addicting. When people run out of their Phentermine, they're not beating down the door of their doctor to get a prescription.

Phentermine is very well tolerated. You have to check heart rate and blood pressure because it is stimulant. And in the brain what it does is it increases the release of neurotransmitters, which are the chemicals that talk between neurons which are the cells in your brain. These cells in your brain talk to one another and through space, the synapse, chemicals get released and that's how they communicate.

Phentermine helps release chemicals called norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. These are neurotransmitters that tend to promote satiety. That's the word for feeling full.

In the rest of your body it actually also increases norepinephrine and epinephrine. Those are the things that you consider adrenaline. Adrenaline, norepinephrine and epinephrine increase the breakdown of fat.

So, if by two mechanisms it decreases the amount of time or the feeling that people have that they're hungry. And it also increases the breakdown of fat for energy.

It is very important - you still have to stick with diet and exercise! A lot of people that think that they just have to pill take the pill and they can keep eating junk, but that's not how it works.

You can overeat the Phentermine, but I would still advise you to stick with a good healthy low-calorie, low carbohydrate diet and a good regular exercise regimen.

People with uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure) cannot start on Phentermine. However, once your blood pressure is under control then you can start the Phentermine with very close monitoring to make sure that it doesn't shoot it out.

Your doctor should check thyroid functions, electrolytes and kidney function prior to starting Phentermine, You can't take Phentermine if you have hyperthyroidism. However, If you check the lab work and as long as you have normal thyroid state, you can use Phentermine.

People who really absolutely cannot use Phentermine are people with heart disease, arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, seizure disorders. For everyone else with all these other issues, you can control the blood pressure because so many times high blood pressure goes along with being overweight. If you control the blood pressure with medication then, Phentermine becomes an option for you.

Topiramate and Phentermine

Topiramate is a seizure medication and when combined with Phentermine it is a drug called QSYMIA. It is also FDA-approved for weight loss. Topiramate is a seizure drug, it works on sodium and calcium channels. It has a lot more side effects than Phentermine does.

While it is an option, we strongly advise you to start with a Phentermine first. And if you really need to then you can kind of either consider going over to QSYMIA or depending on what your insurance covers, you can use to Topiramate by itself off-label.

However be aware about tremendous amount of potential side effects that get higher as the dose goes up.

How Your Fat Looks Like

Picture of fat!!

In this picture we can see a peace of five pounds of fat just so you get an idea. When people don't think about it when they're 20 pounds overweight, that's four of these, that you're carrying around. That gets heavy and it weighs on your knees, your back.

It is curiouse when people do not understand why their back hurts and why their knees hurt and things when they're 20 pounds overweight. But when you look at this and you realize if you're 20 pounds overweight it takes a lot of toll on the mechanics. For each pound you lose very, you take off multiply it by three to get how many pounds per square inch you offload your knees. That's tremendous!

If you lose 10 pounds, you take off 30 pounds per square inch of force across your knee joints. Knees, hip, low back problems are such a huge part of obese eople really don't even think about.

It is very important with your kids protect them from this, protect them from having to deal with this later on in life.

Diet rules

There are two simple rules:

  1. no soda;
  2. eat half.

You can have soda on special occasions but it's not like every single weekend or five days out of the week is a special occasion. Especially cases are birthdays, anniversary, Christmas, whatever. Otherwise, don't have any soda.

Eat half! Only take half, especially if it's a dessert. You don't need the whole thing. If you feel full after you've had half or you're you're happy after you've had half that's good enough.
